Fall Lawn Care

Fall lawn care schedule: core aeration timing, overseeding guide, fall fertilizer and winterizer applications. The most important season for cool-season lawns.

September: The Most Important Month

Core aerate when daytime temperatures drop below 80 degrees. Overseed immediately after aeration into the holes. Apply starter fertilizer at seeding. This combination produces more lawn improvement than any other single action all year.

October: Feed and Protect

Apply fall fertilizer at 1 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. Continue mowing until growth stops. Lower mowing height gradually to 2.5 inches for the final cut.

November: Winterize

Apply winterizer: 1 to 1.5 lbs nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft using quick-release urea (46-0-0). Winterize your sprinkler system before the first hard freeze. Clean and store equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I aerate my lawn in fall?

When daytime temperatures consistently drop below 80 degrees but soil is still warm (50 to 65 degrees). In the Central Plains, the sweet spot is September 1 to 20.

What is the best fall fertilizer?

Two applications: slow-release (24-0-11) in early October at 1 lb N, followed by straight urea (46-0-0) winterizer in late October to early November at 1 to 1.5 lbs N.

Can I overseed in October?

Early October is the last reliable window in the Central Plains. Grass seed needs 4 to 6 weeks of growing conditions before hard frost. Past mid-October, wait until next September.

Should I remove leaves from my lawn?

Mulch-mow light leaf cover. Heavy layers that block light and trap moisture should be raked. A thick mat of wet leaves causes snow mold and dead patches in spring.
