Techniques Technique How To Fall Spring

Hydroseeding

What is hydroseeding, how much does it cost, and when is it better than traditional seeding or sod? Complete guide with honest cost comparison.

Prepare the Soil

Grade smooth, remove debris, till top 1 to 2 inches. Hydroseeding doesn't fix bad grading. Establish proper drainage away from buildings. The slurry sits on whatever surface you prepare.

Choose the Right Seed Mix

Specify grass species when hiring. Most companies use a standard mix unless you request otherwise. Cool-season: tall fescue or KBG blend. Warm-season: bermuda or zoysia. The seed mix matters more than the application method.

Application

A truck-mounted tank mixes seed, mulch, fertilizer, tackifier, and water into slurry. The operator sprays through a high-pressure hose at quarter to half inch thickness. Takes 1 to 2 hours for a typical lot. Stay off the area after application.

Water for Establishment

Begin watering 24 hours after application (let tackifier set). Then keep surface moist: light watering 2 to 3 times daily. The mulch helps retain moisture so hydroseeded areas need less watering than bare-seeded areas. Don't flood: heavy water washes slurry downhill.

First Mow

Mow when grass reaches 3 to 4 inches (typically 4 to 6 weeks). Set to 3 inches. Use a sharp blade. Avoid heavy traffic for 8 weeks. Apply starter fertilizer at 4 weeks after germination. Full establishment takes one growing season.

How Hydroseeding Works

Hydroseeding sprays a slurry of grass seed, wood-fiber mulch, starter fertilizer, a tackifier, and water onto prepared soil using a truck-mounted tank and hose. The mulch holds seed in place, retains moisture, and prevents erosion. The green dye is just a visual indicator so the applicator sees coverage.
