Pure cool-season territory. Kentucky Bluegrass dominates in sun, Tall Fescue handles heat better in mid-Atlantic states, Fine Fescue thrives in shade.
Pre-emergent: late April to early May. Aeration: August 20 to September 15. Fall fertilizer: late September. Winterizer: late October.
Dense, dark green, self-repairing. Needs 4 to 5 lbs N per year.
Better in mid-Atlantic where summers push into the 90s.
A Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass blend works best. Bluegrass provides density, ryegrass germinates fast. Seed in early September.
September 1 to 15 is ideal. Southern PA can seed through September 25. Soil should be 50 to 65 degrees.
Light spring in early May. Skip summer. Fall in late September. Winterizer in late October.
