Frequently Asked Questions

Is there truly pet safe ice melt?

No deicer is completely risk-free if your pet eats it in large quantities. Safe Paw (urea-based) is the closest to truly safe because it contains no chlorides. Potassium chloride products are the next safest. All chloride-based products can irritate paws and cause GI issues if ingested.

Does pet safe ice melt work as well as regular salt?

Most pet-safe products work slightly slower and have a higher minimum effective temperature. Safe Paw works to minus 2 F (adequate for most of the US). Potassium chloride products work to about 12 F. In extreme cold below zero, calcium chloride outperforms all pet-safe options.

Can I use regular salt if I wipe my dog's paws?

Wiping paws helps prevent irritation and ingestion, but rock salt still damages concrete and kills lawn grass along edges. Pet-safe products solve both problems. Use rock salt on the driveway away from pet paths and pet-safe product on walkways where your dog actually walks.
