Landscaping and Hardscaping Technique How To Fall Spring Summer

Edging

How to edge your lawn for clean borders along driveways, sidewalks, and garden beds. Covers edging tools, techniques, and permanent edging materials.

Choose Your Edge Line Spring

Decide where the edge belongs. Along hardscape (driveways, sidewalks, patios), the edge follows the existing surface. Along garden beds, mark the desired line with a garden hose or spray paint first. Gentle curves look more natural than sharp angles. Once set, the edge line stays consistent all season.

Cut the Initial Edge Spring

Use a half moon edger or flat spade to cut a vertical trench 2 to 3 inches deep along the marked line. Hold the tool perfectly vertical for a clean cut. Remove the soil strip between the cut and the bed or hardscape surface. For long runs along driveways and sidewalks, a powered stick edger (gas or electric) is faster and more consistent.

Maintain Monthly Through the Growing Season Summer

Re-edge every 3 to 4 weeks during the growing season to keep lines crisp. A stick edger takes 10 to 15 minutes for a typical yard. Grass grows toward beds and hard surfaces constantly, so regular maintenance prevents the edge from softening and disappearing.

Install Permanent Edging Material (Optional) Spring

For a maintenance free border, install steel landscape edging, aluminum edging, or natural stone along the edge line. Steel edging (14 gauge) is the professional standard: it is nearly invisible, lasts 20 or more years, and holds a crisp line without shifting. Install by digging a 4 inch trench, setting the edging with the flat top at grade level, and securing with metal stakes every 3 to 4 feet.

What Is Lawn Edging

Lawn edging creates a sharp boundary between turf and non turf areas. It serves two purposes: aesthetic (clean lines give a finished, professional look) and functional (prevents grass stolons and rhizomes from invading garden beds, walkways, and driveways).

There are two types of edging: maintenance edging (regular cutting along existing borders with a tool) and material edging (installing a physical barrier like steel, stone, or plastic to maintain the line permanently).
