Spring Lawn Care

Complete spring lawn care schedule: when to apply pre-emergent, first fertilizer timing, mowing start, and soil testing. Month-by-month guide for cool-season and warm-season lawns.

March: Preparation

Clean up winter debris, fallen branches, and matted leaves. Rake lightly to break up any snow mold patches. Do NOT fertilize yet. The grass isn’t actively growing and early nitrogen promotes weak top growth. If you didn’t soil test last fall, collect samples now.

April: First Treatments

Monitor soil temperature with a probe at 2 inches deep. When it holds 55 degrees for 3 or more consecutive days, apply pre-emergent herbicide to prevent crabgrass. In the Omaha metro, this is typically mid to late April. Begin mowing when grass reaches 3.5 to 4 inches. Set your mower to 3 inches. First fertilizer application: use a light rate (0.5 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft) with slow-release product.

May: Active Growth

Mow weekly at 3 to 3.5 inches. Apply grub preventer in early to mid May for season-long control. Spot-treat any broadleaf weeds that escaped the pre-emergent. If you overseeded thin areas in fall, they should be establishing now.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start spring lawn care?

Start with cleanup in March. The first chemical treatment (pre-emergent) goes down when soil temperature reaches 55 degrees for 3 consecutive days. In the Central Plains, this is typically mid to late April.

Should I fertilize my lawn in early spring?

Light fertilization only. Apply 0.5 lb of slow-release nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft in April. Heavy spring nitrogen promotes excessive blade growth at the expense of roots, making the lawn vulnerable to summer stress. Save heavy feeding for fall.

When should I apply pre-emergent in spring?

When soil temperature at 2 inches deep holds 55 degrees for 3 or more consecutive days. In Omaha, typically mid to late April. Too early and it breaks down before crabgrass germinates. Too late and seeds have already sprouted.

Can I seed and apply pre-emergent at the same time?

No. Pre-emergent prevents ALL seeds from germinating, including grass seed. If you need to overseed, skip pre-emergent in those areas and hand-pull crabgrass. Fall is better for overseeding.
