Find Your Spreader Model
Scotts makes three main broadcast spreaders: Elite (largest), EdgeGuard DLX or Mini (most popular), and Wizz (handheld battery). Each has different dial settings. Check the model name on your spreader before using the charts above.

Match Product to Setting
Scotts products list the spreader setting on the bag. For non-Scotts products (Milorganite, Lesco, Anderson's, lime), use the settings in the chart as starting points. When in doubt, start LOW: you can always add more.

Calibrate for Your Walking Speed
Settings assume about 3 mph walking pace. Faster walking = less product. Set the dial, fill hopper, apply to a measured 100 sq ft area. Weigh what came out. Multiply by 10 for per-1,000 sq ft rate. Compare to bag rate. Adjust up or down.

Apply in Two Perpendicular Passes
Set spreader to HALF the recommended setting. Make two passes: north-south then east-west. Two passes at half rate produces more uniform results than one pass at full rate. Eliminates striping.

Clean After Every Use
Fertilizer residue corrodes spreader parts. After every use: empty hopper, hose down impeller and housing, dry before storing. Spray WD-40 on the impeller and settings dial. A clean spreader lasts 10+ years. A neglected one seizes in 2 to 3 seasons.
