Are you ready for spring? After a long winter in Omaha, we are too! Is your lawn ready for spring? Taking a few important steps right after the snow melts for the final time can make a big impact. As you know, winter can be a particularly harsh time here in Omaha. The temperamental weather can wreak havoc on your great outdoors. As soon as the snow melts for the last time, head outside and survey your landscape. Do you see broken branches? Areas of dead grass? Taking stock of the damage that the weather has caused will give you a good idea of what you’ll need to have done in the coming months.

Rake out thatch.

You may have thought raking was only for the fall, but raking your lawn once the snow has cleared is actually incredibly beneficial for its health come spring and summer. If there are areas of thatch, or clumps of dried, dead grass, raking them out will help the grass that is actually alive get the precious oxygen and sunlight it needs. Another benefit of raking out your grass is by helping to dry and get rid of any “snow mold” that may have formed throughout the winter.

Stimulate new growth.

When it comes to your grasses, trees, shrubs, and perennials, spring is the time to get rid of the old in order to make room for the new. Cutting back bushes, shrubs, and perennials and removing old growth sets the stage for these plants to emerge more beautiful than ever once spring begins in earnest. However, be aware that plants often need to be pruned at different times. Make sure you consult an expert if you aren’t sure when the right time to prune is. Overseeding grass in areas of your lawn that look patchy or thin is another important step for stimulating new growth in your lawn.

Apply fertilizer, pre-emergent, and weed killer.

Applying the right blend of nutrients and fertilizers will help wake your lawn up from its long winter slumber. We create custom programs depending on the needs of your specific lawn, but in the beginning of spring, the goal is the same for everyone. Wake the grass up with the nutrients it is craving, help prevent weeds from popping up, and prepare the grass for a long season of resilience and growth.
