Time Your Application for Fall Fall

October through early November is the most effective window in the Central Plains. Dandelions are actively moving nutrients to the taproot for winter storage. Herbicide applied now gets transported deep into the root system. Spring applications often only burn back top growth.

Choose a Selective Broadleaf Herbicide

Products containing 2,4-D, dicamba, or triclopyr kill dandelions without harming most cool-season grasses. Three-way combination products provide the broadest control. Triclopyr is strongest for stubborn plants. Check the label for your turf type.

Spot Spray Individual Plants

Use a pump sprayer for targeted application. Spray each rosette until leaves are wet but not dripping. Apply on a calm day (wind under 5 mph) to prevent drift. Best conditions: 60 to 80 degrees, no rain forecast for 24 hours.

Wait and Assess

Treated dandelions curl, yellow, and die over 7 to 21 days. The taproot dies more slowly than visible top growth. Do not pull treated plants early because the herbicide needs time to translocate through the entire root. Survivors after 3 weeks need a second application.
