What Drives the Cost

Tree removal pricing is based on four factors: height, diameter, location, and complexity. A 30-foot tree in an open yard costs one-third what the same tree costs when it’s leaning over a house with power lines nearby. The access for equipment (crane, bucket truck, or climbing-only) is often the biggest price variable.

In our experience with tree service pricing in the Omaha metro, most residential removals fall in the $500 to $1,500 range. The outliers are small ornamentals under 20 feet ($200 to $400) and large shade trees over 60 feet near structures ($2,000 to $5,000+).

Factors That Drive the Price

Height and Diameter

The primary cost driver. Each 10 feet of height adds $100 to $300 to the base price. Trunk diameter over 24 inches requires heavier equipment.

Location and Access

Trees near houses, fences, power lines, or other structures cost more because they must be dismantled in sections rather than felled whole. Crane access adds $500 to $1,000.

Species and Condition

Hardwoods (oak, maple) are denser and heavier than softwoods (pine, spruce), requiring more labor. Dead trees are unpredictable: branches may break during removal, adding risk and cost.

Debris Removal

Hauling logs, branches, and brush is included in most quotes. Leaving logs for firewood may reduce cost. Chipping branches on-site is standard. Large trunk sections may require additional hauling.

Emergency vs Planned

Storm damage removals on short notice cost 50 to 100% more than planned removals. Schedule non-emergency removals in winter (off-season) for the best pricing.

Stump Grinding

Usually quoted separately at $100 to $400 per stump. Grinding removes the stump to 4 to 8 inches below grade. Full root removal is more expensive and usually unnecessary unless you're building on the site.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to remove a tree?

Small trees under 30 feet: $200 to $500. Medium trees 30 to 60 feet: $500 to $1,500. Large trees over 60 feet: $1,500 to $3,000+. Prices vary by location, access, and complexity. Trees near houses or power lines cost more because they must be dismantled carefully rather than felled.

How much does stump removal cost?

$100 to $400 per stump for grinding to 4 to 8 inches below grade. Stump grinding is usually quoted separately from tree removal. Large stumps (over 24-inch diameter) cost more. Most companies charge a minimum plus per-inch pricing for additional stumps.

Is tree removal covered by homeowner's insurance?

Only if the tree falls on a structure (house, fence, car) or blocks a driveway. Preventive removal of a healthy but inconvenient tree is not covered. Dead or hazardous tree removal may be partially covered if it poses imminent danger to the home. Check your policy or call your agent.

When is the cheapest time to remove a tree?

Winter (December to February) is typically 10 to 20% cheaper because it's the off-season for tree companies. The ground may be frozen, which actually helps: less lawn damage from equipment. Avoid scheduling during or immediately after major storms when every tree service is overbooked.

Can I remove a tree myself?

Only small trees (under 15 feet) in open areas away from structures and power lines. Anything taller, near a building, or requiring a chainsaw on a ladder should be done by a professional. Tree removal is one of the most dangerous jobs in America. A falling tree doesn't negotiate.
