When to Use Weed and Feed (And When Not To)

Weed and feed is a convenience product that combines fertilizer with broadleaf herbicide in one application. It works well for lawns with scattered broadleaf weeds (dandelions, clover, plantain) during active growth. It does NOT work as a pre-emergent (won’t prevent crabgrass), doesn’t control grassy weeds, and shouldn’t be used within 6 weeks of seeding or overseeding.

In our professional opinion, separate fertilizer and herbicide applications give better results because you control the timing and rate of each independently. But for homeowners who want one bag and one pass, these are the best options.

How We Tested

Ranked by weed control spectrum, fertilizer quality, grass type compatibility, ease of application, and cost per 1,000 sq ft. Evaluated on broadleaf weed control (dandelion, clover, plantain) across cool and warm-season turf. Prices checked April 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I apply weed and feed?

Spring (April to May) or fall (September to October) when weeds are actively growing and temperatures are between 60 and 85 degrees. The lawn should be slightly damp so granules stick to weed leaves. Do not apply in summer heat (above 85) or to drought-stressed lawns. Do not mow for 2 to 3 days before or after application.

Is weed and feed safe for all grass types?

No. Most weed and feed products are NOT safe on bahia, centipede, or St. Augustine grass. Check the label carefully. Scotts Southern Triple Action is specifically formulated for warm-season grasses. When in doubt, use separate fertilizer and herbicide products matched to your grass type.

Can I use weed and feed when overseeding?

No. The herbicide in weed and feed kills grass seedlings along with weeds. Wait at least 6 weeks after overseeding before applying weed and feed. Wait at least 4 weeks after weed and feed before seeding. This timing conflict is why professionals prefer separate products.

Does weed and feed prevent crabgrass?

No. Weed and feed contains POST-emergent herbicide that kills existing broadleaf weeds. It does NOT contain pre-emergent to prevent crabgrass germination. For crabgrass prevention, you need a separate pre-emergent product applied in early spring before crabgrass germinates.
