What Is Perennial Ryegrass
Perennial ryegrass is a cool-season bunch grass valued for two things: it germinates in 5 to 7 days (fastest of any lawn grass) and it has excellent wear tolerance. It’s rarely used as a standalone lawn in the US because it lacks the density of bluegrass and the heat tolerance of fescue. Instead, it’s used as a blend component (10 to 20% mixed with bluegrass) for quick establishment and as an overseeding grass on warm-season lawns for winter color in the South.
How to Identify Perennial Ryegrass
Ryegrass blades are medium-width with a distinctive glossy appearance on the upper surface and prominent parallel veins on the underside. The blades fold in the bud (like bluegrass) but are wider and shinier. Ryegrass forms dense clumps and has a finer texture than tall fescue but coarser than bluegrass.
