What Is Centipede Grass

Centipede grass is called the lazy man’s grass because it needs less fertilizer, less mowing, and less water than any other common warm-season lawn grass. It grows slowly, stays low (1.5 to 2 inches naturally), and thrives in acidic, infertile soil that would starve other grasses. Centipede is the dominant lawn grass in the sandy, acidic soils of the southeastern US from the Carolinas through east Texas.

How to Identify Centipede

Centipede has medium-width blades (3 to 5mm) with a light apple-green color that’s distinctly lighter than the dark green of bermuda or zoysia. It spreads by stolons that root at each node, creating a creeping habit that gives the grass its name (the stolons look like centipede legs). Growth is noticeably slower than bermuda: a centipede lawn mowed weekly in summer barely accumulates clippings.

The #1 Mistake: Over-Fertilizing

The most common way to kill centipede grass is to fertilize it like bermuda. Centipede needs only 1 to 2 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year. Applying 3 to 4 lbs (a normal bermuda schedule) causes centipede decline: excessive top growth, thatch buildup, shallow roots, and increased disease susceptibility. If your centipede lawn is declining, the first thing to check is whether you’re over-fertilizing.
