Navigation and Mapping
The LUBA 3 uses Mammotion’s Tri-Fusion system combining RTK GPS, LiDAR scanning, and AI vision. This triple-redundancy means the mower almost never loses its position. Under our oak trees where pure RTK mowers occasionally drift, the LUBA 3’s LiDAR provided rock-solid backup positioning. The mapping process is similar to Segway: drive the mower around the perimeter with the app. Mammotion’s app is functional but less intuitive than Segway’s. Multi-zone setup requires more taps and the 3D map visualization is less refined.
Slope and Terrain
This is where the LUBA 3 dominates. AWD with tank-like traction handles our 25-degree slope without breaking a sweat. The rated maximum is 80% grade, which is a near-vertical incline that no residential lawn should have. On wet grass, steep terrain, and rough ground, the LUBA 3 was the most confident mower we tested. If your property has serious terrain challenges, nothing else comes close.
The Turf Damage Problem
The LUBA 3’s biggest weakness is turf damage during turns. It uses skid steering (spinning the left and right wheels at different speeds), which drags the inside wheels across the grass during pivots. On our fescue test area, we noticed visible scuff marks at turn points after 10 days. On bermuda, the damage was less visible because bermuda self-repairs aggressively. For homeowners who care about turf appearance, this is a meaningful drawback compared to the Segway X4’s turf-safe Xero-Turn system.
